About Caret
Caret is a small idea taken seriously: your AI assistant should already be where you work — fast, private, and on your side.
Why we're building it
Today's best AI lives in a browser tab. To use it you stop what you're doing, switch windows, paste in context it can't see for itself, wait on a round trip to a server, then copy the answer back. Every one of those steps is friction — and friction is why most people never make AI a daily habit.
Caret removes the friction. It lives in your system tray and answers a double-tap of Shiftfrom anywhere. It can read what you've selected and what's on your screen, so you don't have to explain your context. And because it runs locally, the answer comes back in about a second — often typed straight into the app you were already in.
Local-first, on purpose
Everything Caret does runs on your own machine through open models. That isn't a privacy gimmick — it's what makes the rest possible. When nothing leaves your device, it's safe for an assistant to see your screen and remember what matters to you. Your work stays yours, with no accounts, no telemetry, and no per-query bill.
What we believe
- Speed is the feature. If local doesn't feel faster than the cloud, it isn't worth it — so we obsess over latency.
- Reliability over hype. We'd rather do a few things flawlessly than promise everything and break.
- You're in control. Your data, your models, your memory — visible and editable, never locked away.
Early days
Caret is in active development, built by a small, independent team. The best way to follow along — and to help shape it — is to join the waitlist. We'll reach out the moment early access opens.
